Kana River Series
I was invited to attend an artists residency at Shiro Oni Studios in Japan to develop my practice. I made three bodies of work which all relate to each other. They are unified by colour, clay and intent and are a visceral and emotional response to the landscape of Onishi. I used all of the clays available and experimented by layering them together and manipulating the material to create dynamic forms full of energy and flow, relating to the Kana river, as well as quieter shapes that are more meditative and reflective of the stones used in the Zen temple rock gardens.
The residency culminated in a four day and night anagama firing in the mountains of Onishi, followed by an artists talk and exhibition at Kanezawa Park, an old sake brewery.
